Mikkeli Provincial Hospital

Mikkeli Provincial Hospital was the 17th military hospital during the Winter War and the Continuation War. Men who were wounded on the front were transferred via dressing stations further inland to hospitals, where the majority of treatment was administered. Between the beginning of February 1942 and November 1944, approximately 11,000 military patients were treated in Mikkeli.

The major assault in the summer of 1944 put the entire country’s hospital network, hospital staff and other employees to the test: from July to September wounded men were continuously transported across Lake Saimaa on barges to Mikkeli harbour, where the majority were put on trains destined for other military hospitals.

The central hospital was hit by several bombs during the Winter War. On 5 March, a bomb penetrated the air raid shelter constructed in the building’s basement and killed more than 20 people taking refuge there. Several were also injured.

In 1965, Mikkeli Provincial Hospital was put into municipal ownership and renamed Mikkeli Central Hospital.
