Mixed School

Mikkeli mixed school, designed by Wivi Lönn, was the town’s third grammar school. It was used by Headquarters during the Winter War and the Continuation War.

The mixed school housed the personnel responsible for inspecting field mail, monitoring communications and, in the Headquarters photography division, taking photographs and preparing photographic material for the purposes of military history and communications. The supply division was responsible for ensuring that road and water shipments got through and for general supply requirements. The mixed school also served as the base for the honours office; many Finnish soldiers were awarded medals of honour after processing at Mikkeli Mixed School.

The building nowadays houses the lower school for the central area of Mikkeli, and the school is known as Päämajakoulu, which translates to the “Headquarters School”.
